Code of Hammurabi
Stele with law code of Hammurabi
Babylon king Hammurabi (r. 1792-1750 BCE) reestablished centralized government in southern Mesopotamia. He is known for his code of law, which is preserved on this stele in cuneiform. Shown in relief, Hammurabi stands before the sun god Shamash, who bestows on Hammurabi the right to rule. The two figures are shown in hierarchical proportion, Shamash being much larger to indicate his power over the mortal Hammurabi.
